The Power of Photography

October 3, 2017

As our nation grieves the loss and tragic experience that we have all witnessed in these last few months. We are inundated with images. From Hurricane Harvey in Florida, Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rice, to the Mass Shooting in Las Vegas. There are images of destruction, terror, deaths, and heroic actions. The saying goes “A picture’s worth a thousand words,” and that couldn’t be more true as we heal from these past few months.

As photographers we are challenged with documenting the most memorable moments in history. Whether it be a 1st Birthday Party, Wedding, Senior Portraits or, unfortunately for some, document the tragic events that plague our country. Documenting these events is not what all photographers go into the business to do, but it is a necessary profession that shows the world what is happening. Some see it as insensitive to the victims and their families, they feel that photographers are only there to make a buck off someone else’s suffering. That is not the case at all, without these folks we would not, as a nation, be able to fully support and understand what these people are going through.

I have the pleasure of documenting happy memorable moments that people get to celebrate, and look back on with fondness. I am fortunate enough to not have to be at ground zero capturing images of those suffering. My heart goes out to my fellow photographers who witness such tragedies and do so with grace and compassion for the victims and survivors.
